Personal experience says - never take anything sugar coated cos the reason you are where you are can't be removed with a pill.
My mother used to be a spitting ball of madness - fistycuffs at every given opportunity. Now she just rambles. At least when she threw something she appeared alive. Through time and neglect, whilst in receipt of prescription meds, turned into a psychotic loon. Well done NHS.
Jaded cynicism says - if John isn't ready to face the problems but need to feel better, he needs to take the pills. If John wants to feel better and change things - he needs to do some talkin. And he mustn't give up til he's got what he needs.
Wishing all good things!
I think antidepressants have a place in certain types of depression but ultimately it is help with coping with the stresses of life that people need assistance with: i.e cognitive behavioural therapy and the like, with the majority of cases.

Unfortunately there just aren't enough of these practitioners around (although this is improving). Your average GP consultation is ten minutes and in no way can they offer counselling in these sessions bar some advice sheets.

Even bigger than this and more difficult to "treat" is the societal causes for depression. The breakdown of community, loss of extended families, altered working patterns, material wealth as a form of self worth.

This all impacts on the spectrum of stress and sadness -> anxiety states and depression.

In response to:Emotionless anger

I can see the lack of self-belief in your post - I hope that you can come out of your current situation, and hope that you have support from your friends too.
I have had several friends on "useful" anti-depresant pills, or "happy" pills. As in the UK alone at least 1 in every 3 teenagers are depressed. I know this isn't very useful but there is not alot you can do. I am depressed myself(not that you wanted to know that) but one of the best thinks you can do is be there for your friend "John". Don't let "John" forget who he is and hang out with friends alot.
If there is one thing I have learnt, it is that you can't make someone not be depressed you need to give them time and just be there for them.
I agree that people that put people on anti-depression pills just want to make $, and zombifly them. But you can't let "John" become a zombie as they forget who they once were and get even more depressed...Sorry if this was of no help or comfort :S
